I am glad you found your way to this page. It can be a daunting task to find a good psychotherapist. The two most important factors in choosing a good therapist are whether you and the therapist are a ‘good fit’ and if the therapist has experience in helping others with challenges similar to the ones you are struggling with.
Being a good fit simply means you feel comfortable with the therapists and with their personality. After all, you are going to spend some time with them discussing some difficult issues. If you do not feel that the therapist ‘gets you’ it will impede the process and therefor, your progress.
Speak with the potential therapist on the phone, ask questions about their professional training and experience. Ask about their personal experiences, if you feel that could make a difference in your treatment.
Once you have gathered all your data and asked all your questions it’s time to trust your gut. If you don’t feel comfortable with a certain therapist it’s ok to say so and ask them for a referral to someone who may better fit your needs.
A good psychotherapist won’t mind helping you find the right fit for you.
